Tips for a Green Visit to Stratford-on-Avon

While you’re enjoying your visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon, you can also help to protect the environment, prevent climate change and safeguard everybody’s health! Here are some tips for an eco-friendly visit:

  1. Use the Park & Ride Scheme. If you are travelling to Stratford-Upon-Avon by road, to beat traffic congestion in the town centre, consider using the Park and Ride scheme.  Parking is free all day, and the buses run every 10 to 15 minutes direct to the town centre and the attractions.   2. Take the train. Beat the traffic by travelling by rail. You can travel to Stratford-Upon-Avon station from London Marylebone (about 2.25 hours) or from Birmingham Snow Hill (about an hour) – see Stratford Station for more information. Stratford-Upon-Avon is also the departure point for a steam excursion on the Shakespeare Express.
  3. Travel Around by Bus or Coach. See the Warwickshire County Council website for bus and coach timetables and maps.
  4. Go Walking. You can go on an organised walk with an experienced guide, and explore local footpaths or te surrounding countryside. For more information, see the Ramblers website.
  5. Try Cycling – Stratford is relatively flat and ideal for cycling. You can view the Stratford-Upon-Avon Cycle Route Network on the Warwickshire County Council website and parts of the Stratford-Upon-Avon Canal towpath are suitable for cycling. A pleasant route from the town centre is the Greenway Cycle Route. This is signposted to the south of the railway station and extends five miles to Long Marston. Stratford Bike Hire can provide routes and itineraries to tour the Shakespeare houses and surrounding countryside.
  6. Stay in Eco-friendly Accommodation. Try entering ‘eco-friendly accommodation’ in Google to find hotels, guest houses and campsites that use alternative energy resources such as solar panels, reduce carbon emissions, recycle wherever possible, use bio-degradable cleaning agents, source food locally, use renewable furnishings, and so on.
  7. Recycle your waste. You can drop your rubbish at one of the District Council’s mini-recycling centres, where you will find containers for paper, glass, plastic bottles, shoes, textiles and books. In the town centre, these are located at Morrison’s car park in Alcester Road (CV37 9DA), and Tesco’s car park at Birmingham Road (CV37 0UA).

Not only can these tips help you to save the planet, but you might also see aspects of Stratford and its surrounding countryside that you would otherwise have missed.
